3 GROUPS HONOR YOUNG MUSICIANS

It’s one thing to win an award, it’s another when part of the prize is an opportunity to gain experience, too. Several local arts organizations offer just that every year, and three of them recently have announced winners and concerts. Pittsburgh Concert Society

Last Saturday, the Pittsburgh Concert Society named its 2011 Young Artists Auditions Winners. Each receives a $500 Benjamin and Anna Perlow scholarship but also will be presented in concert on either Feb. 27 or March 13 at Carnegie Mellon University. Adjudicated by John Mangan, vice president and dean of the Curtis Institute of Music, the following students took prizes:

  • NILES BRANDON (PIANO, PINE-RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL)
  • LYDIA GIBSON (MEZZO-SOPRANO, SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE)
  • HELEN KIM (PIANO, TAYLOR ALLDERDICE HIGH SCHOOL)
  • BRANDON LAMBERT (TENOR, POINT PARK UNIVERSITY)
  • ELEANOR LEE (CELLO, TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL)
  • MICHELLE LEE (PIANO, NORTH ALLEGHENY HIGH SCHOOL)
  • DANA SCHNEIDER (HARP, SENECA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL)
  • KATHERINE ZHOU (PIANO, NORTH ALLEGHENY HIGH SCHOOL)

PITTSBURGH CIVIC ORCHESTRA

The Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra picked its Young Artist Competition winners earlier in the season, but they will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at Upper St. Clair High School. Stephanie Guo (pianist, North Allegheny High School) solos in a movement of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1; Sara Law (soprano, The Ellis School) sings selections from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” and from Handel’s “Rinaldo”; and Eleanor Lee (cellist, Trinity High School) will perform the finale of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. The concert opens with Schubert’s “Tragic” Symphony.

Jimmy Conkle (percussion, Washington High School) prevailed in the Washington Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition last December. In addition to picking up $500, he will perform Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for Vibraphone and Orchestra with the WSO at 8 p.m. Feb. 12 at Trinity High School, Washington.
