Andrew Carlisle, an internationally known, award-winning bagpiper from Northern Ireland, has been named Carnegie Mellon’s new director of piping. Carlisle will lead the university’s pipe band, orchestrate its participation in competitions, university events and ceremonies, and promote the School of Music’s bagpipe major. He succeeds James McIntosh, who has served as interim director since Alasdair Gillies left the university last fall. Carlisle, who will join CMU in September, comes from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, where he teaches in the undergraduate music program, and has directed the university’s Traditional Irish Ensemble. “Andrew’s background and experience in solo and pipe band competition, pipe band instruction, and his academic expertise in the area of European traditional music with specific focus on the Celtic regions are strengths that will support his success as director,” said Vice President for Campus Affairs Michael Murphy. “I look forward to his many contributions to our students, the division and the broader university community.”
