  • Attend and complete the mandatory International Undergraduate Orientation  immigration registration. More information can be found on the Orientation webpage.
  • Complete your immigration registration with OIE by the end of the first day of classes. This is required to maintain your legal nonimmigrant status in the U.S.

More information can be found on the First-Year Orientation website. In the meantime, check out the following websites:
  • Purchase health insurance. Health insurance is required by the University and is a necessity in the U.S. because the cost of routine and emergency health care is extremely expensive. For more information about Carnegie Mellon Health Services, please check with Health Services. Or learn more about purchasing health insurance as an international student.
  • Apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) if you will be employed on campus. A Social Security Number is a number used for tax purposes that are required for employment in the U.S. You must have an offer of employment to be eligible to apply for an SSN.
