Settling In Guide

Welcome to the United States, Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University! The OIE Staff hopes to get to know you better over the course of your program with Carnegie Mellon University.

Please use this Settling in Guide as a reference for preparing to come to the United States and during your program of study at Carnegie Mellon University.

This guide was developed to help our various international populations adjust and get to know the university. It has sections with general information, but certain sections pertain to specific categories. We define the categories as:

  • International undergraduates and graduate students (F & J students)
  • Exchange students from Carnegie Mellon University campuses abroad (F students)
  • Exchange students from non-US partner institutions (J students)
  • International scholars (J researchers, professors, short-term scholars, and student interns)

Orientation Welcome Session & Immigration Check-In

All new students are required to complete an OIE International Orientation and Immigration Check-In upon arrival to Carnegie Mellon University. Pittsburgh students are required to attend the OIE Mandatory Immigration Check-in & Welcome Session. In addition to regularly reviewing the OIE website and Twitter page, we encourage you to check your Andrew email account frequently, as this is how OIE will contact you with important orientation information and updates. If you will not be studying at the Pittsburgh campus, OIE will send you information on how you can fulfill the orientation requirement remotely.
