Computing at Dietrich College
Dietrich Computing and Operations (DCO) provides hardware and software technical support for university-owned computers. Support is limited to specific computer models and is offered for faculty, staff and graduate students.
While faculty are encouraged to utilize Carnegie Mellon's Canvas system for class materials, DCO offers limited file server space to faculty members to store class files and other related items in a location accessible to students and colleagues. This space is accessible while on the Carnegie Mellon computing network as well as via VPN. If you require file server space, or have any questions, please contact us for further details.
Our Services
We offer multiple services, including assistance connecting to campus printers, website construction and maintenance, data back up, consulting and more.
Dietrich Computing and Operations provides contractual services to support the IT needs of projects outside the scope of standard support. If you have a project that requires computational, project management or server based support needs, please contact us to discuss your options. Initial consultations to determine project needs are not charged. Through strategic relationships with other computing groups, we may be able to help you gain access to established resources and infrastructure.
Please email to discuss your needs or call 412-268-5136.
Dietrich Computing and Operations provides recommendations for equipment purchases to departments that will be supported by our group. DCO staff works directly with users to determine the best computer equipment that will their requirement. A quote will then be provided to departmental purchasing officers. Dietrich Computing does not handle any purchasing.
Supported Models:
In all instances, the computers must be CMU-owned (i.e., no personally owned computers).
PCs
- Selected Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell Latitude and Optiplex models
- For software support, the machines must utilize an i5 processor or better
- For hardware support, we are often able to provide direct hardware repair or we can facilitate on-site repair for Dell technicians, as necessary
Macs
- Any model laptop or desktop
- For software support, the machines must utilize an i5 processor or better
- Hardware repairs are typically facilitated through any Apple Store
Please email to discuss your needs or call 412-268-5136.
Dietrich Computing and Operations offers cloud-based backups for all desktops and laptops. In order to receive backups, a machine must be a DCO supported and configured operating system. Our cloud-based backups only back up data files and we will no longer be offering OS backup support. The backup program is managed by our group and only requires an active network connection be it on campus or away.
There is an annual fee for this service charged to departments based on the number of users enrolled in the program.
If you are not enrolled or would like more information, please email to discuss your needs or call 412-268-5136.

Dietrich Computing and Operations offers a hosted web service in partnership with the CMU CMS office for departments and programs affiliated with the college. All sites in the system are published using the endorsed CMU branding and templates to help unify our college web presence.
This service is charged on a fixed annual basis for qualifying programs and departments. If you would like to explore using DCO as your webmaster, please email to discuss your needs or call 412-268-5136.

Printing Support Documentation
Need help connecting with a printer on campus? Explore our support documentation or reach out for assistance.
How to Add Printers in Dietrich on an Andrew Windows PC:
- Log in to your computer using your Andrew username and password to the "ANDREW" domain
- Add the printer queue:
- Click "Start", then "Run", and type: \\hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu
- Double click on the desired printer queue to add it
The name of the printer can be found on a white label attached to the printer.
NOTE: These printers will only show up for your username (i.e., each user needs to set up their own printers after they've logged into the computer).
How to Print in Dietrich from a Non-Andrew Windows PC:
In order to setup an Dietrich printer on a PC that is not a member of the ANDREW domain, you must perform the following steps. This procedure sets up your computer to reconnect and authenticate to the printer resources on the HSSCOMP print server.
- Email hsshelp@andrew.cmu.edu:
- state that you will need permission to print
- tell us which department you are associated with
- provide your Andrew ID
- On your Microsoft Windows computer:
- Right-click "My Computer" (or "This PC" in later versions) and choose "Map Network Drive"
- Set the drive letter to whatever you like (we like Z:)
- Set the folder to be: \\hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu\hsscomp
- Place a check in the box for "Reconnect at Logon"
- Click "Connect Using Different Credentials"
- Type "andrew\YOURUSERID" (YOURUSERID is your AndrewID)
- Type your Andrew password and click "Ok", then click "Finish"
- Add the printer queue:
- Click "Start", then "Run", and type: \\hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu
- Double click on the desired printer queue to add it
The name of the printer can be found on a white label attached to the printer.
Note: Since the "Reconnect at Logon" setting is not always reliable, you may occasionally find it necessary to double-click the mapped network drive to HSSCOMP to elicit the username/password dialog box and re-log in before printing.
How to Add Dietrich Printers in MacOS (OSX):
This is the supported method for connecting to Dietrich printers in MacOS (OSX) and higher.
You will need to know the printer name and whether you want to use any finishing features (ie staple, hole punch, etc), and you will need to know the model as well.
- Make sure you are connected to the CMU network (wired or wireless)
- From the Apple menu, choose "System Preferences"
- In "System Preferences," click on "Printers and Scanners"
- From the Printer List box, click the "+" button at the bottom left hand side
- Choose "IP" at the top of the new window (it may be the default)
- Configure as follows:
- Address: hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu
- Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
- Queue: Enter the name of the printer
- Name: Enter the name of the printer again
- Location: Can leave blank or enter a location if you wish
- Use: For basic printing you can use the Generic PostScript Printer. If you want to use finishing features like stapling you will need to select the model of the printer; if it is not available from the list you will need to download and install a driver for it. You can contact Dietrich Computing for assistance.
- Click Add (if you get prompted for printer options, make sure you check the box for "Duplex Printing Unit").
If you need any assistance please contact Dietrich Computing at (412) 268-5136 or hsshelp@andrew.cmu.edu.
