FAQs: SEVP Portal

The following frequently asked questions relate to the Student Exchange & Visitor Program (SEVP) Portal. Immigration regulations and policies are subject to change. Please regularly review this FAQ page and OIE's News & Updates, and stay tuned to your email, for new and updated information.

The Student Exchange & Visitor Program (SEVP) Portal will allow F-1 and M-1 students to report personal and employer information directly to SEVP. Through the portal, these students will be able to:

  • add or edit their phone number,
  • add or edit their mailing and physical address, and
  • add or edit their employer information.

The only exception is that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) OPT student trainees will not be able to add or delete their own employer information during the STEM OPT extension period.

Students who plan to request the STEM OPT extension period must submit the "STEM I-20 OPT Request" E-Form via the Limited Services Login option on MyOIE

The Form I-983, “Training Plan for STEM OPT Students,” requires the student’s designated school official (DSO) to add employer information.

The only way to initially get to the Portal Registration page is through the link that SEVP sends you via email. The link is single use and is only active for 14 days after you receive the email.

If you are already registered, you can access the SEVP Portal at https://www.sevp.ice.gov/opt.

Yes. Please review the resources available from the Department of Homeland Security

You are required to register your account within 14 days of receiving the registration email!

Although your account must be registered, you are not yet required to submit reports through the SEVP Portal. OIE highly recommends that you do so as it is the fastest and most accurate way to report your information.

The following must be true in order to receive the registration email:

  • Your OPT is approved
  • You have received your EAD,
  • Your OPT has started (i.e., your start date is not in the future)
  • Your email address is in SEVIS.
If any of these things are not true, you cannot access the portal at this time.

Make sure to check your email accounts and spam folders for a message from do-not-reply.sevp@ice.dhs.gov

If you feel you should have received an email, but never did, submit the "Unable to Create SEVP Portal Account" E-Form through the MyOIE Portal

Emails will ONLY come from Do-Not-Reply.SEVP@ice.dhs.gov. Always double check the sender address before entering your information. The government will not ask you to pay for anything through the SEVP Portal.

If you report a new email address to OIE through the MyOIE portal, that information is reported to SEVIS. Within 24-48 hours of the update, you should receive two emails from SEVP:

  1. An email to the deactivated account, indicating that the email address is no longer listed in your SEVIS record.
  2. An email to the new account, which includes a temporary login password.

Once the change is made, your username becomes the "new" email address.

Students on Post-Completion OPT

You may add, edit, or delete employers; update residential address information; and update your telephone number. Remember that your employment must DIRECTLY relate to your major field of study. OIE provides examples of appropriate job descriptions

Students on STEM OPT

You may update your supervisor and employer address for your current company; update residential address information; and update your telephone number.

If you stop working for your STEM OPT employer and begin working for another employer during your STEM OPT period, you must submit the "STEM I-20 Request" E-Form via MyOIE within 10 day sof leaving your previous position.

If you stop working for your STEM OPT employer, but you do not have a new job offer, you must submit a completed and signed "Final Evaluation on Student Progress" (bottom section of page 5 of Form I-983 to oie@andrew.cmu.edu within 10 days of your final date of employment.

If you have forgotten your password, but are not locked out of your account, you can reset your own password. View instructions in the SEVP Portal Help website.

You will need to submit the “Unlock my SEVP Portal account” E-Form through the MyOIE Portal.

Attention: Your portal password needs to be reset every 90 days. SEVP will send you an email reminder. If you do not update your password on time, your account will be locked and you will need to submit the "Unlock my SEVP Portal account" E-Form to have your account unlocked.

Students on Post-Completion OPT

At this time, if you update your information through the SEVP Portal and would like an updated I-20, you must also submit a “Report Post Completion Employer” E-form through the MyOIE Portal. It takes a minimum of 5 business days to issue an updated employer I-20. We request that you do not email OIE regarding the status of your request, until at least 5 business days have passed.

You should ONLY request an updated I-20 if:

  • You are traveling internationally, soon, and have updated your employment information
  • Your employer has requested an updated copy of your I-20 and you have updated your employer information

Students on STEM Extension

Please email oie@andrew.cmu.edu for more information.

The reason that both your Post-completion and your newly requested STEM-OPT say inactive is that your Post OPT has ended and your STEM OPT has not been approved yet.

You do not need to do anything at this time.  Please note that unlike the initial 12 months of OPT, as long as your STEM application is timely filed, you can continue working for up to 180 days while waiting on your new EAD card.  This is unique to the STEM OPT.  This rule can be found on immigration’s policy guidance.

The SEVIS system does not allow OIE to update previously completed periods of OPT. This is why it is important that students report employment/address updates within 10 days of the event.

You should keep good records of all OPT employment, so that you can respond to any questions you may receive. This may include copies of paystubs, offer letters, W-2s, etc.
