Post-Completion OPT Reporting

F-1 students beginning their Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT Extension must report certain key details regarding employment to OIE. This reporting is required to maintain legal status and eligibility for employment in the United States.

Reporting Requirements for Post-Completion 12-Month OPT

Students on Post-Completion (12-month) OPT, need to report certain employment and personal information changes in the SEVP Portal within ten days of any change. Including:

    • Changes to name, residence, or mailing address
    • Changes to immigration status (changing from F-1 to H-1B)
    • Employment changes (if you leave a job, change jobs, etc.)
    • Name and address of an OPT employer
    • Start and end dates of OPT employment
    • If you decide to terminate your OPT status and leave the U.S.

As a reminder, OPT employment must be directly related to your major field of study. View this PDF for sample OPT job explanations.

SEVP Portal

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Portal is a tool for F-1 students on Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT. You can use the portal to report changes to your home address, telephone number and employer information.

On or after your OPT start date, SEVP will send an email to your Andrew email to activate your SEVP Portal account if you have an approved EAD Card and are within the dates listed on the card. These emailed instructions will come from do-no-reply.sevp@ice.dhs.gov

Activate your SEVP Portal account within 10 days of receiving the email from SEVP. You must activate your account right away or the SEVP link will expire.

Update your information to use a non-Andrew ID email account by submitting the "Change Email Address" E-Form via the MyOIE Portal.

On and through the duration of your OPT, use the MyOIE Portal (Limited Services Login) to access any E-Forms.

You must log into the SEVP Portal within two weeks of receiving the email, or you will be locked out of the system. View Frequently Asked Questions to find out what to do if you have been locked out of the portal.

SEVP has a SEVP Portal Help section on the Study in the States website, where you can find step-by-step instructions and video tutorials for using the portal.

Double-check all of your email accounts and your spam/junk folder.

If you have reached your OPT start date but still have not received an email, complete the "Unlock SEVP Portal Account" e-form through the MyOIE Portal

While reporting via the SEVP Portal is the preferred reporting method, students on Post-Completion (12-month) OPT may also submit updates using the MyOIE Portal.  If you failed to report employment within the 10 day regulatory requirement, you must use the MyOIE Portal to report the employment. If you want to report employment prior to your OPT start date, you also must use the MyOIE Portal. Submit the “Report Post-Completion OPT Employer/Address Update '' e-form to report employment in the MyOIE Portal. Please use only one reporting method, the SEVP Portal or MyOIE Portal, to ensure the accuracy of your F-1 record.

Follow these detailed instructions for accessing the MyOIE Portal after graduation.

Need an Updated I-20?
