Attention: Telephone Scam Targeting Students from China

A campus alert message was sent out yesterday regarding a telephone scam involving CMU students from China (view the message).  OIE asks that students, staff and faculty share this message broadly to alert classmates, friends and family members at CMU and elsewhere in the US about these scams. Prior callers pretended to be US government agents, and the most recent callers are pretending to be Chinese government agents.

If you answer this type of call, do not wire money or provide personal information. Neither Chinese nor US government agencies will ever require you to wire money or send gift cards. Instead, immediately hang up and report the call to the police.

Please share this information and help stop these criminals from taking advantage of people.
