On the Brink: A Panel Discussion on Russia and Ukraine

Join Carnegie Mellon’s Institute for Politics and Strategy for a panel discussion of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This virtual event on Monday, Feb. 28, from 5 to 6 p.m., is open to everyone interested in learning more about this developing situation. Moderated by Dr. Andreea Deciu Ritivoi, William S. Dietrich Professor of English and Head of the English Department, the panel will feature: CDR Kim Manuel, US Navy Federal Executive Fellow, Institute for Politics and Strategy; Dr. David Parker, Assistant Teaching Professor of Russian Studies, Department of Modern Languages; Dr. Wendy Goldman, Paul Mellon Distinguished Professor of History, Department of History; Dr. Emanuela Grama, Assistant Professor and Director of Global Studies, Department of History. Please register and submit questions ahead of time.

“Athena”

The Olympics might be over, but the drama isn’t! The School of Drama presents: “Athena” by Gracie Gardner, directed by Samantha Toy Ozeas. In this play, Mary Wallace and Athena are brave, seventeen, fencers, and training for the Junior Olympics. They practice together, compete against each other, and spend their lives together. They wish they were friends. Opening Monday, Feb. 28, to Thursday, March 3, you can come to see Athena at the Helen Wayne Rauh Theater in the Purcell Center for the Arts. Reserve tickets online or over the phone at (412) 268-2407.

Mask and Test Vending Machines

Not your average vending machine! You can find COVID-19 rapid antigen at-home test kits and KN95 masks in four vending machines across campus. The vending machines are located in Cohon University Center (Lee Lobby), Purnell Center for the Arts (near room 103), Baker Hall (140 corridor), Mellon Institute (3rd floor in the glass room near the freight elevator). You can use the machines by swiping your CMU ID. All faculty, staff and students are eligible to vend one test kit (two tests in each kit) and one package of two KN95 masks each week, as supplies are available. Each vending machine will be stocked weekly while supplies last.

Flamingo Fest

Here’s a splash of color in a grey February! Flamingo Fest is back! On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visit the National Aviary for fun with the flock. Take in the sights and sounds of the Wetlands during a special flamingo talk and then explore all of the exhibits. This event is family-friendly and is included with admission to the Aviary.

They have a whole day of climbing, yoga, fitness, and fun planned, complete with giveaways and more. Best of all, Day Passes are $5 with free rental gear all day long! The Pittsburgh Symphony presents Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Love music? Love movies? Join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26, starting at 7 p.m. This performance features screenings of the complete film with Oscar-winning composer John Williams’ musical score performed live to the film. Whether you’ve seen the movies a hundred times or this will be your first time, it is sure to be a spectacular performance. You can learn more about the performance, and purchase tickets in advance.
