Greetings, Students & Scholars!

We're halfway through April, and we hope you all enjoyed Spring Carnival last week! There are still plenty of things happening this week, including a few important updates for tax day and SSN requests. We hope you enjoy this issue of the OIE "Friday Greetings" email.

OIE & CMU News & Events

Update to SSN Request Form

The Social Security Administration (SSA) office in Pittsburgh has updated its application process. They are no longer accepting digital signatures on the SSN Request Form for students with on-campus employment. Additionally, they are now open for walk-in appointments. F-1 or J-1 students who have secured an on-campus job but lack an SSN will fill out OIE's Social Security Number Form: F-1 or J-1 Student On-Campus Employment (pdf). Students should first have their hiring department sign the form by hand and then drop off the form at the OIE office. OIE is open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. OIE will sign to verify immigration status. The student can pick up the form at OIE after five business days. This form is required in order to proceed with the SSN application process. NOTE: F-1 students who obtain an on-campus job with a CMU food service vendor should have their employer complete this Social Security Number Form (pdf) instead. We recommend that students and scholars applying for an SSN use walk-in service at the SSA office at 6117 Station Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 (East Liberty). Walk-in service is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Looking for scholarships available to you as an international student? The International Peace Scholarship Fund was established in 1949 to provide scholarships for international women students to pursue graduate study in the U.S. or Canada. The scholarship is based upon demonstrated need; however, the award is not intended to cover all academic or personal expenses. If you want to apply, you will need to indicate additional financial resources adequate to meet your estimated expenses. Examples of additional resources are private and family funds, tuition waivers, work scholarships, teaching assistantships, study grants and other scholarships. The maximum amount awarded to a student is $12,500. Lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs. Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year will open in the fall. You can learn more about the program and application process.

Mayor Gainey grew up in East Liberty and saw firsthand the economic hardships many families face in our city. Inspired to help others, Gainey discovered in college that an effective government could be a powerful tool to fight injustice and uplift communities.
