Apply to Gain Data Fluency

Over the past decade, the volume and complexity of data has grown at a rapid pace. Now more than ever before, organizations in nearly every industry need professionals who can understand and incorporate data science into their current roles to drive strategy and decision making.

In Carnegie Mellon’s new online Graduate Certificate in Foundations of Data Science, students will gain fluency in topics like statistical thinking, data wrangling and data visualization from award-winning faculty through evidenced-based pedagogical practices. With support from faculty and peers alike, students from all backgrounds will be empowered to pursue further education in data science, make more data-informed decisions in their current role, or communicate more easily with data scientists in their organization.

Are we the right fit?

Let’s face it, pursuing any kind of advanced training is an investment of your time, energy and resources. Before you consider our program, make sure your background aligns with our program expectations.

Successful applicants will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree
Every industry generates data, which means every industry needs professionals who can analyze data to revamp and optimize business practices. Applicants do not need a technical background to apply for this program. Anyone can apply as long as they’ve earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A forward-thinking mindset and an innate curiosity
If you’re ready to forge a new path, level up your career or leverage data in new ways, this program is for you. Successful applicants will be eager to learn new skills they can apply in their current role, or a future role, right from the start. Although concepts might be new and challenging, an applicant’s hunger to learn and belief in their own potential will propel them forward.

Successful applicants might also have:

  • Basic knowledge of statistics and calculus
Applicants might have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts in statistics and calculus, either from exposure in the classroom or experience in the workplace. Although exposure to these concepts is preferred, it is not an admissions requirement. Resources will be available before the program start date for individuals who need to familiarize themselves with these concepts.
  • Exposure to programming languages
Applicants might be familiar with programming languages like Python, R, Java or MATLAB, either from exposure in the classroom or experience in the workplace.
