Proposed Rule May Impact Students and Scholars in F and J Status

On Oct. 12, 2020, an addendum to this message, which includes a more detailed summary of the proposed rule, was published to the OIE website. Read more.

A proposed rule was published to the Federal Register on Friday, Sept. 25, that would, if finalized, impact students and scholars in F and J immigration status. As a global institution that deeply values international education and our international community, Carnegie Mellon is mindful of all federal regulations and policies that could affect our students and scholars.

The Office of International Education (OIE) is working to review and assess the implications of the proposed rule and will communicate more information as quickly as possible. In the meantime, a summary may be found at: www.nafsa.org/professional-resources/browse-by-interest/proposal-replace-duration-status.

It is important to note that the proposed rule is not final or in effect, and it may change. Public comments submitted to the government, encouraging them to consider things they haven't considered or correcting information that is incorrect, can be helpful in effecting change. OIE encourages students and scholars to submit comments. Carnegie Mellon will be commenting and will vigorously advocate on behalf of our international students and scholars.

Students and scholars with immediate questions or concerns may email oie@andrew.cmu.edu.
