Student Visa Updates

Dear students and scholars,

I’m writing to you as we continue to navigate a shifting landscape in higher education that is disruptive and unsettling for many of us.

We are aware of reports of a cable issued by the U.S. State Department, directing consulates to pause visa appointment scheduling for F and J visa applicants. State Department officials have advised us that this is a short pause. Our students and scholars are obtaining visas and previously scheduled appointments are continuing.  We are closely monitoring this situation and encourage visa applicants to continue the process.

We are also working to assess the possible implications of other U.S. State Department announcements this week related to visas for Chinese students and visa restrictions for people who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the U.S.

I want you to know that we’re communicating with federal officials to understand these changes and to learn how we can best serve you–our students and scholars. We remain committed to bringing the best and brightest from around the world to study and engage in teaching and research at CMU.

For those of you who have questions related to travel, please review our international travel guidance. For other specific concerns or questions, I encourage you to reach out to the Office of International Education.

Your well-being is a priority, and I take seriously our responsibility to ensure that you are equipped with the information you need to navigate these uncertain times.

Sincerely,

Linda Gentile
Executive Director, Office of International Education
