International Student Status Update

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

I am writing to provide an update regarding the student visas of several current and recent CMU students that were revoked, and whose records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) were terminated. As of April 27, all but one of these terminated records have been returned to active status; the remaining student has completed their practical training.

This is undoubtedly good news for our community. All of CMU’s affected current students and alumni on Optional Practical Training (OPT) have been notified. Since their records are now active, these students can resume employment in the U.S.

Carnegie Mellon remains committed to its international students and scholars and will continue to provide the support necessary to help them thrive in their academic and research endeavors. Along with our university leaders, OIE is closely monitoring developments at the federal level and will continue to share resources and guidance directly with impacted students to help them navigate a continually shifting landscape. CMU is among many institutions helping students navigate an unsettling time, as across the country, hundreds of international students saw their SEVIS records terminated and then restored.

As we approach the end of the academic year, international students and scholars are encouraged to monitor the Office of International Education website for immigration policy updates, and to review the considerations for upcoming international travel. Additionally, CMU’s Federal Transition webpage provides updates, guidance and tools to navigate ongoing changes to federal policies and priorities related to immigration, research and support for our community. Any updates will also appear in a special section of The Piper. As always, you can contact OIE directly with your questions.

To reiterate what President Farnam Jahanian recently stated in a message to the CMU community, our university is a place where diversity of thought, background and experience fuels our innovation and advances our mission to have a transformative impact on society. This philosophy is foundational to OIE and remains at the core of everything we do to support our international community.

Sincerely,

Linda Gentile

Executive Director of the Office of International Education
