Barry Bookheimer

Assistant Director, Employment Immigration Advisor

Barry serves as Assistant Director, Employment Immigration Advisor within OIE. Prior to joining CMU, he worked for several years as a Business Immigration Supervisor and Legal Writer at one of the largest immigration law firms in the world.

Barry obtained his bachelor’s degree in History at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga, and his master’s degree in History at the University of Pittsburgh. His graduate thesis focused on Ukrainian Displaced Persons in Europe after the Second World War, and he completed language training and original archival research in Ukraine and several locations across Germany while working on his project. He has visited 15 countries to date and is looking forward to traveling to even more. Barry is passionate about immigration and believes that strengthening human global connections makes the world a more understanding and peaceful place to live.

Barry loves Pittsburgh and has lived in the city since 2015. While he grew up in southern California, his family’s roots are in Western Pennsylvania, and he is the descendent of immigrants who found work in the coal mines and steel mills throughout the region. Outside of work, Barry enjoys spending time with loved ones (including his spouse and very silly dog), hiking, cooking, baking, listening to and writing music, and is currently learning as much as he can about photography. He also enjoys exploring the city on foot and is always on the lookout for a nice cup of coffee or tea.
