MS-DAS Admission
You have seen how the power of computation is changing every field of science — and you’re passionate about the ways it can accelerate discovery. But you need the computational foundation to turn your curiosity into impact. The MS-DAS can help you build it.
Admission Requirements
The Master of Science in Data Analytics for Science (MS-DAS) degree program in the Mellon College of Science equips students from biology, physics, math, chemistry and related fields who are eager to learn and apply incredibly powerful data analytics tools to drive progress in scientific research. This one-year program, offered in partnership with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, will prepare you for a high-impact career in scientific research and development across industry, academia and government.
Unlike other graduate programs in data analytics for science, the MS-DAS at Carnegie Mellon University does not require a computer science or engineering background. We meet you where you are and give you a world-class foundation in mathematics, statistics and programming skills to understand the basics of computational modeling, analytical tools and machine learning.
Knowledge and Skills for Successful Candidates
We designed the program for people with an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics or a related science-based major/minor.
Though not required, it is ideal if applicants have completed an introductory Python programming course and an introductory linear algebra course at the undergraduate level. We also accept candidates who are able to show an equivalent level of knowledge through personal or professional experience. If you have not completed this coursework, you may still be admitted — although you will need to complete it prior to enrollment.
Be sure to check our MS-DAS FAQs for more information.
Application Process
To apply for the program, you will need the following components to complete your application.
Your first step is to create your account. Once you start your application, you can save your work and return at any time to complete it. We do accept applications on a rolling basis, but if intending to enter the program in the fall term, we recommend applying by the preceding January.
We do not require the GRE or collect GRE general or subject test scores.
The MS-DAS requires non-native English language speakers to submit an official score from one of our accepted English language proficiency tests: Duolingo English Test, TOEFL or IELTS.
Be sure to request that the testing agency send us your official scores, using the following program code:
- Duolingo English Test: Select “Carnegie Mellon University – Mellon College of Science”
- TOEFL:
- Institution Code: CMU 2074
- Department Code: 99 (Other)
- IELTS Program Code: Select “Carnegie Mellon University, Mellon College of Science”
NOTE: Exceptions to this policy will not be granted except in the case of non-native English speakers who have completed or expect to complete a four-year undergraduate degree in the United States. These candidates may use a prior score, including the test score used for their undergraduate application. Please include a copy of the prior score report in the optional materials section of the application.
To apply, you must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the U.S. or an equivalent degree from a foreign country prior to the start of the program.
You must upload legible scanned/digitized copies of official transcripts and degree certificates indicating name, degree earned and the date the degree was completed (if applicable) for ALL institutions attended, including exchange programs and transfer credits.
All of your transcripts should clearly state your name and the name of the institution. Upload all pages of your transcript, including the transcript key for your university (for U.S. institutions, this is often found on the back of the transcript). If any transcript is in a language other than English, an official translation must also be included.
If you are admitted, official transcripts from your educational institution must be directly submitted to our admission office.
Your Statement of Purpose should be a well-written one- or two-page essay about:
- Your motivation for pursuing the MS in Data Analytics for Science degree
- Any prior internship, research and/or programming experience
- Your future career intentions
Your application must include a current copy of your resume. Your resume should be one to two pages and highlight the achievements you have made in your professional, research and/or academic career.
We require three (3) letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources. At least one letter should come from an academic source. You should select recommenders who know you well and can speak to the quality of your prior work and your potential for success in a computationally rigorous graduate program of study.
The online application system will request the letters from your recommenders on your behalf, and your recommenders will be able to submit their letters through the system as well.
A $25 application fee is required. We regret that it is not possible to waive this small fee, with the exception of Rales Fellowship applicants and current CMU undergraduate students. Requests for fee waivers will not be granted otherwise.
