Professor Akinci Named ASCE Fellow: Recognized for Innovation

Burcu Akinci, the Paul Christiano University Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named an ASCE Fellow—a prestigious recognition granted to only 3% of ASCE members. This fellowship acknowledges her remarkable contributions to civil and environmental engineering.

Akinci's expertise lies in data-driven construction and infrastructure management, specifically in the realm of digital twins. Her pioneering research focuses on integrating building information models with advanced data capture technologies, like 3D imaging and embedded sensors, to create digital twins for construction and infrastructure projects. These digital twins enable proactive and predictive management, revolutionizing the industry. ASCE honored her work in this area with the 2023 Peurifoy Construction Research Award.

Beyond her research, she has played vital roles, such as associate dean for research, co-chair of CEE's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, and founding chair of the ASCE Taskforce on Fostering Inclusive Academic Communities. She currently serves on the National Academy's board on infrastructure and the Connected Environment.

Akinci is a distinguished researcher and an exceptional educator, focusing on project management for construction and building information modeling. Her record includes two patents, over 170 publications, and mentoring numerous students at all academic levels.
