Classroom to Community: Designing Little Free Libraries in CEE Project Course

The sophomore project course introduces students to the design process by tackling challenging, unstructured problems. Students worked on a project to design and build Little Free Libraries for clients, emphasizing the importance of design, community engagement, and environmental considerations in the learning process.

Integrating the Built, Natural, and Information Environments

CEE Juniors’ project course connected students with professionals to develop plans to improve Pittsburgh's Craig Street for a safer and more inviting college town destination with enhanced traffic flow, cyclist space, and pedestrian amenities.

Best Design at TechSpark: 'Mixed Use Valley Paths' Urban Mobility Innovation

Senior capstone project "Mixed Use Valley Paths" team secured the Best Design award at College of Engineering’s TechSpark Engineering Exposition by reimaging urban mobility along Washington Boulevard. Their innovative pathways and safety-centric designs reshaped Pittsburgh's urban landscape.

CEE’s Industry Partnership Initiative: Shaping Tomorrow’s Engineers

The CEE Industry Partnership Program aims to foster collaboration between the civil and environmental engineering department, students, and industry leaders to drive innovative solutions. Through events like open houses, career expos, and panel sessions, it facilitates valuable interactions, knowledge exchange, and recruitment opportunities, benefiting both the companies and the department's students and faculty.

Undergraduate Program: Building CEE Skills Across the Curriculum

CEE's undergraduate program in Civil and Environmental Engineering is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the field by incorporating program threads covering various key concepts and themes throughout their academic journey. These threads ensure that students develop both technical skills and a sense of social responsibility, empowering them to make a positive impact in their careers and communities.

Gold Organizes Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Service Trips

Three teams from CMU traveled to Florida, Texas, and Louisiana during Spring Break to assist communities through Habitat for Humanity. They used the skills gained from their studies, exemplifying the importance of volunteerism and addressing housing and infrastructure challenges in impoverished areas. Recent graduate Brett Gold plans to continue his public service involvement, leveraging his engineering background to make a difference and support the growth of CMU's Habitat for Humanity Chapter.

Brown Blends Engineering & Creativity in Phipps Fashion Project

Chloe Brown, a rising junior studying Civil Engineering and minoring in Drama, collaborates with CMU drama students to design a transparent, androgynous suit with faux fungi for Phipps Conservatory's Flowers Meet Fashion exhibit inspired by Billy Porter, on display until June 25.

Peng Receives Commendation for Excellence at Thrill Design Invitational

Junior Justin Peng was one of 127 students from 18 university teams who took competed in the Toronto Metropolitan University’s Thrill Design Invitational—presented by Universal Creative™.

DEI Hackathon Challenges Students to Develop Solutions

CEE’s recent Hackathon challenged students to create Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) focused solutions for problems. Teams focused on developing solutions to issues that they find to be personally fulfilling and winning ideas earned students cash prizes. All participants had the opportunity to network with industry experts as well.
