Amusement park trips, riverboat dinners, and ski outings are held every year. Department staff and faculty also host various breakfast, lunches, and dinners throughout each semester. Halloween and winter holiday parties, as well as freshly made breakfasts during finals give students a chance to re-fuel after weeks of hard work and studies.

In addition to these department sponsored events, students can join CMU’s chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and Chi Epsilon. These organizations hold activities for the students, and allow both undergraduates and graduates to get involved.

American Society of Civil Engineers - ASCE

The vision of ASCE, America's oldest national engineering society, is "to position engineers as global leaders building a better quality of life." The Carnegie Mellon chapter of ASCE fulfills this mission by providing social, educational, and professional development opportunities to Civil Engineering majors. ASCE encourages members to grow to become civil engineers who can advance the profession. Chi Epsilon (ChiEp) 

ChiEp is an honors society that fosters the development and exercise of sound traits of character and technical ability among Civil Engineers by precept and example, working toward an even higher standard of professional service. Chi Epsilon helps students to develop key characteristics that will allow them to pursue a successful engineering career, and give back to the civil engineering profession. The Carnegie Mellon chapter is one of 130 active chapters, and recognizes its members for their achievements in scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability

Engineers Without Borders (EWB)

EWB-USA helps create a more stable and prosperous world by addressing people's basic human needs by providing necessities such as clean water, power, sanitation, and education. EWB-USA's strength comes from its over 250 dedicated chapters, including university chapters on 180 campuses in the United States.   Website

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

The NSBE mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively affect the community. The Carnegie Mellon chapter of NSBE participates in activities such as tutorial programs, group study sessions, high school/junior high outreach programs, technical seminars, and workshops in addition to taking advantage of all the resources and opportunities afforded by the national organization.   Website

Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE)

The CMU Chapter of SASE aims to prepare and strengthen Asian Pacific American scientists and engineers for their future careers by providing them with professional development and networking opportunities with both fellow students and professionals from various careers and backgrounds.   Website

Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE)

The Carnegie Mellon chapter of SHPE strives to increase the number of Hispanic engineering and science students at Carnegie Mellon through the development of programs with industry and the university. These activities are designed to increase career awareness, encourage relationships with professionals, develop leadership skills, and promote academic excellence.   Website
