Dietrich Welcomes Class of 2028+

Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences recently welcomed the class of 2028+ during Orientation Week. From Aug. 17 to 25, 2024, first-year students met Bess Family Dean Richard Scheines, spent a night at the Heinz History Center and got acquainted with all things Dietrich College.

Here’s what their first week at CMU looked like:

Bess Family Dean Richard Scheines welcomed first-year students and their supporters on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Kelli Maxwell, associate dean of student success, welcomed first-year students in a speech about nervous excitement and reaching success by doing three things: talking to academic advisors, taking care of yourself and relying on your network.

After the welcome on Sunday, students, their families and supporters enjoyed ice cream from Happy Day Dessert Factory.

A tradition of Dietrich College Orientation Week, first-year students explored the Heinz History Center on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Thursday, Aug. 22, Dean Scheines spoke to students about freedom of expression.

Students met with Patrick Doyle, academic program manager. — After the lecture from Dean Scheines, students participated in the annual Passport to Dietrich event, which helps students to become familiar with the many departments, programs and institutes, as well as resources across campus. One of the stops was the Department of Philosophy, where students met with Patrick Doyle, academic program manager.
