Connecting with Remote Desktop

The Chemical Engineering Department provides remote access to the Cluster software via Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection. By using Remote Desktop Connection, you will be able to connect to and use the Chemical Engineering Cluster's software from dorms, off-campus apartments, and other campus cluster computers. You will be able to print from anywhere to the cluster printers as well as from the cluster to a remote printer.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of Fall 2014, you must be connected to the Campus General Use VPN in order to connect to Remote Desktop from Off-Campus.
  1. Click the Start Orb, then type Remote Desktop in the search box.
  2. Click on Remote Desktop Connection.

  3. Type remotedeskop.cheme.cmu.edu into the Computer field (Screenshot is incorrect):

  4. Click on the Show Options>>, Then click on the Local Resources tab: Local Resources Tab
  5. Insure the Printers box is checked and then click connect.
  6. On the warning window check the box that says Don't ask me again for... Warning Window Then click OK.
  7. On the login screen enter you username and password using andrew\AndrewID as the format for your username and your andrew password. Click the arrow to the right of the password box to begin the connection. Your desktop will appear as though you're on a computer in the cluster. You might be redirected back to the login screen. If this happens simply login again. This occurs when the system sends you to a different server.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of Fall 2014, you must be connected to the Campus General Use VPN in order to connect to Remote Desktop from Off-Campus.

  1. Download and install Microsoft Remote Desktop which can be found in the Mac App Store.
  2. Once installed, open Microsoft Remote Desktop and click New.
  3. Enter a connection name that will help you identify the server. Type remotedesktop.cheme.cmu.edu (We added a second server during COVID. remotedesktop2.cheme.cmu.edu) into the field for PC Name. Enter andrew\andrewID with your own andrewID in the user name field. Enter your corresponding password. Close the window to save. Remote Desktop
  4. Click on your newly created server, and press Start. If prompted about an untrusted connection, select Connect Always. Untrusted Connection
