Londono Awarded Miller Presidential Fellowship

Esteban Londono, a doctoral candidate, has recently earned the prestigious Ruth Furman Miller and David H. Miller Presidential Fellowship within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the College of Engineering, University. Londono obtained his undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Iowa. Presently, he collaborates with Professor Kelvin Gregory, delving into the realm of designing and implementing machine learning models for taxonomic classification in varied environmental datasets.

Londono’s research focuses on evaluating the interpretability of models based on task selection, devising diagnostic tests to identify classifier biases, and scrutinizing the impact of data collection methods and representations on model efficacy. He is currently applying this research to develop models for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in simulated wastewater data to facilitate early outbreak detection.

Expressing his gratitude, Londono remarks, "Receiving the Ruth Furman Miller and David H. Miller Presidential Fellowship is a tremendous honor. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Miller family for their generous support and to my advisors for their invaluable guidance throughout my graduate studies."

This award was made possible through a generous gift in 2016 from the estate of Ruth Furman Miller.
