Status of Study Abroad for Spring 2022

Carnegie Mellon and the Study Abroad team are thrilled that study abroad has resumed for CMU students for the fall 2021 semester. We appreciate and thank the institutions and programs abroad that have welcomed our students, and commend those individuals who are taking advantage of these global opportunities during this time of uncertainty.

Spring 2022 Study Abroad

With fall semester study abroad underway, the university is pleased to announce that we will continue to consider requests from students for spring 2022 semester study abroad using the same exceptions/approval process utilized during the fall term. We plan to have initial decisions communicated to students by November 1, 2021.

Spring 2022 Incoming Exchange

As we continue to welcome our own students and faculty back to Pittsburgh and prioritize an on-campus experience, CMU will unfortunately continue the suspension of incoming exchange for spring 2022. Office of International Education (OIE) staff and university leadership monitor the global situation on a regular basis with the hope that we will be able to resume receiving exchange students from our Partner Institutions in fall 2022.

Winter Break & Spring Break 2022 Abroad

Due to pandemic-related changes for short-term travel, short-term study abroad will not be supported during winter break and spring break this academic year. We understand this is disappointing news to students who had hoped to participate in a study abroad experience during their break, and we hope that these types of opportunities will become available next academic year.

Summer 2022 Study Abroad

For summer 2022, OIE staff and university leadership will continue to monitor the global situation with the hope of moving forward in the same manner as decisions are being made for fall 2021 and spring 2022 study abroad.

As mentioned before, OIE values and supports study abroad and cross-cultural educational; however, the ongoing global pandemic necessitates constant review and there remains the possibility of students having to make alternate plans. We hope that circumstances will improve and opportunities for study abroad will increase as time moves forward.

Study Abroad Advisors in OIE remain available to consult with students as they consider future options.

Policy Update

As of November 1, 2021, university-sponsored international travel is now allowed; however, CMU community members are still subject to requirements and approvals for university-sponsored travel. Please contact GoAbroad@andrew.cmu.edu for more information about the study abroad approval process.
