Spring 2022 Study Abroad Update

Dear Student,

In consulting with university leadership over the past several weeks, we are pleased to announce that we will move forward and evaluate study abroad programs and locations on a case-by-case basis for the spring 2022 semester, using the same exceptions/approval process utilized during the current fall 2021 semester.

While this is positive news, it is important to keep in mind that even if Carnegie Mellon University grants initial approval, it could be withdrawn if circumstances change in your intended study abroad location.

In order to move forward and formally request that your program be reviewed for approval, please complete the attached Exception Request Form and return it to our office via email at goabroad@andrew.cmu.edu by Wednesday, October 20, 2021. For those of you who have applied to multiple programs, submit only one form for your top choice or preferred program at this time. For forms submitted on time, we plan to have initial decisions communicated to students by the first week of November.

As you move forward with planning, it is imperative that you consider the following:

  • Is COVID-19 testing required prior to departure, upon arrival, or both?
  • Is proof of a COVID-19 vaccination required to participate in your program abroad?
  • What are the mask requirements in your host country?
  • Is a quarantine period required upon arrival? How long? Where? At whose expense?
  • Do you have appropriate medical coverage in your host country? How and where do you receive care if you need to see a doctor?
  • If you need to quarantine mid-term, where is this completed and at whose expense? Is it included in your program fee?
  • If you are approved to participate in study abroad, we recommend purchasing flight insurance and understanding the terms of insurance coverage. Does your airline allow for flight changes, etc.?
  • Be aware of cancelation policies and program deadlines by which you would need to withdraw from your respective programs in order to receive any refunds.

We're still in the midst of navigating a global pandemic; therefore, there may be unique challenges to address, as this will not be a typical study abroad semester.

We are looking forward to helping you plan a rewarding and safe study abroad experience, so feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.

Best,

Linda Gentile, Director of the Office of International Education
