Scheduling for Scholar Orientation

OIE hosts an orientation and immigration check-in for new scholars every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Within the first week of your arrival, email OIE at oie@andrew.cmu.edu to register for the next orientation session. This is a required meeting for scholars in J-1 immigration status and is recommended for all new scholars. During orientation, we also complete the immigration check-in that is required for all new scholars in J-1 status.

In your email to OIE, be sure to include a photocopy of your passport, visa, I-94 departure card, and DS-2019 form, as well as any other immigration paperwork. Spouses are also welcome to attend the orientation session. 

The orientation sessions are intended to assist visiting scholars in J, H, F-1 Optional Practical Training, and other immigration/visa categories in getting acclimated to CMU and Pittsburgh. New scholars and visitors find the orientation session to be helpful. In addition to immigration and visa matters, we also discuss practical matters such as applying for a social security number, health and health insurance, housing, banking, transportation, and more.
