The Major in Linguistics

  • Linguistics provides us with tools to help crack the code that underlies the complexities of languages
  • Encompasses a broad spectrum of research questions, approaches and methodologies
  • Provides students with fundamental tools of linguistic analysis and maintains a focus on the human context
  • Brings together courses from the departments of Philosophy, English, Modern Languages, Psychology and the Language Technologies Institute to offer students a broad set of options for exploring interests
  • Courses focus on topics from phonology, phonetics & syntax to creative topics like “Invented Languages” and “Interstellar Linguistics”

Linguistics is also offered as a minor, which focuses on the same skills as the major, but requires only six courses.
