Carnegie Mellon University

The Major in Ethics, History, & Public Policy (EHPP)

  • A highly interdisciplinary program, EHPP is jointly administered by the Departments of History and Philosophy and is unique to Carnegie Mellon University
  • Graduates of this major leave with highly-valued research skills and an advanced capacity for moral reasoning
  • Students learn to: conduct historical research; analyze and construct arguments; find persuasive means of presenting their ideas; and craft policies that address real world problems in a way that is sensitive both to history and competing sets of values
  • Students participate in a Capstone Project designed to engage them with real‐world public policy challenges

The Philosophy department also offers a minor in Ethics, which aims to provide a foundation in ethical theory and its applications to help students learn to respond to new and unavoidable ethical problems in business, government, technologies and more.
