A Message From the President
We are a university that values interdisciplinary collaboration, a commitment to solving the big challenges faced by the world, and an indefatigable work ethic.
These are the qualities that characterized us in 1900 as a school founded by Andrew Carnegie for the sons and daughters of Pittsburgh’s steelworkers, and these are still the qualities that fuel one of the most dynamic and innovative institutions of higher education in the world today.
With historic strengths in technology and the arts, in an environment without boundaries, Carnegie Mellon prizes the intellectual and creative risks that results in innovations.
This culture of innovation places us in a position to respond to the challenges of our time, perhaps like no other university can, in areas including energy and the environment; health and quality of life; next generation computing and communication; artistic inquiry; and the global society and economy.

Jared L. Cohon
President, Carnegie Mellon University
