Jian Ma is the Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology, Interim Head of the Ray and Stephanie Lane Computational Biology Department, and Director of the Center for AI-Driven Biomedical Research (AI4BIO) in the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. His lab develops AI and machine learning methods to understand genome organization, gene regulation, and cellular interactions across molecular, cellular, and tissue scales. A major research interest is understanding the molecular and cellular organization of the brain, including how changes in genome architecture and gene regulation contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. The group aims to develop generative and agentic AI approaches that uncover disease mechanisms and guide experimental discovery.
