Olivia Wu Becomes the First INI Student to be Named a Swartz Fellow
Master of Information Technology in Information Security (MSIT-IS) student Qinyuan (Olivia) Wu has been named one of the 2023-2025 James R. Swartz Entrepreneurial Fellows. Olivia is the first INI student to be a part of this highly selective program that helps passionate students start their entrepreneurial journey in the technology arena.

INI Student Joins the US Cyber Team
INI student Rohan Viswanathan (MS35) has been drafted on to the US Cyber Team for Season III of the international cybersecurity competition. This is the second season Rohan has taken part in the competition. After returning from Norway for the final part of Season II, Rohan stopped by to talk about his experience on the team and how the INI impacted it.

Devika Yeragudipati Devarakond Named CMU Alumni Award Honoree
The CMU Alumni Awards are presented to alumni who have made great strides in their field and made major impacts on the CMU community. In 2023 another INI alum was presented with this prestigious honor. Devika Yeragudipati Devarakond graduated in 2012 and was named 2023 Recent Alumni Service Award honoree.

INI Students and Alumni Secure 7th DEF CON Capture-the-Flag Title with Carnegie Mellon's Hacking Team
The winningest team in DEF CON’s Capture-the-Flag (CTF) competition history, Carnegie Mellon University’s Plaid Parliament of Pwning (PPP), was back at it again, as the team defended its title, earning its seventh victory in the past eleven years. This year's team was joined by Erye Hernandez (INI Alum), Carolina Zarate (INI Alum), Jenish Rakholiya (INI Alum), Palash Oswal (INI Alum), Dillon Wu (INI Alum), Kevin Stephens (MSIS 33), Luke Rindels (INI Alum).

INI Alumna Inês Oliveira (MS18) Publishes Her First Children’s Book, Calvin and the Sugar Apples
Everyone’s journey after graduation is unique and INI students are well equipped with skills and experience that can be applied anywhere. Inês Oliveira (’08, MSIN) has drawn from her experience in a surprising way. After spending some time in the tech industry, Inês decided to write a children’s book to impart some valuable life lessons about life and loss. With her first book about to be published, Inês took some time to share her journey and filled us in on how her time at CMU and the INI inspired her to pursue writing.

Practicum Insider: Transactive Energy Systems (TESS)
Six CMU master’s students from the Information Networking Institute (INI), sponsored by members of SLAC (Stanford’s National Accelerator Laboratory), worked on the lab’s Transactive Energy Service System (TESS) as part of their INI curriculum. The students gained real-world experience working in the transactive energy industry, and the project culminated with the presentation of their work at the annual INI practicum showcase in December 2022.

INI Students Defend CMU Hacking Team's Title at MITRE Cybersecurity Competition
For the second year in a row, Carnegie Mellon’s competitive hacking team, the Plaid Parliament of Pwning (PPP), has taken home the top prize at the MITRE Embedded Capture-the-Flag (eCTF) cybersecurity competition. The PPP team is made up of 14 students from across the university, more than half of which were INI students and alumni. INI Associate Teaching Professor Patrick Tague serves as a co-advisor to the team while Assistant Teaching Professor Hanan Hibshi serves as a faculty advisor.

INI Practicum Student Insider: NASA
In an effort to improve the safety and efficiency of air transportation, Georgios Ioannides (MSIT-IS ’22) and five fellow peers—all Information Networking Institute students—partnered with NASA Ames Research Center to improve simulation tools for use in U.S. civil airports. These tools are intended to simulate flight itineraries, controller commands, aircraft movements, and uncertainties at the San Francisco International Airport with the aim of improving air traffic control and scheduling.

Among the Stars at SpaceX
Information Networking Institute alumnus Henry Howland (MS34) landed a dream job as a security analyst at SpaceX. Working for the aerospace company had been his goal all along. He had engineered it to happen, starting with enrolling in the INI’s Master of Science in Information Security (MSIS) program.

On the heels of WiCyS’s 10th anniversary, the INI returned as a gold sponsor for WiCyS 2023, the organization’s annual conference which was held in Denver, Colorado from March 16-18. Why INI Gives You an Edge: A Talk with Rotem Guttman
Rotem Guttman ’12 is an engineer at the Software Engineering Institute’s CERT Division and a faculty member for the INI’s Cyber Forensics and Incident Response certificate track. He recently redesigned the curriculum of the CyFIR capstone to immerse students into a realistic scenario in which students conduct a forensic investigation over the course of the semester and present their cases during mock hearings. The new course earned him the CMU Andy Award for Creative Innovations. He is an alumnus of the INI and the Scholarship for Service program.
