#TartansAbroad: Students Share Their Study Abroad Experience Through Social Media

As Carnegie Mellon students return to campus after spending a semester, summer or even full year abroad, we asked them the simple questions: How, Where, and Why? The motivation to study abroad is different for every student and can often be academic, experimental, or cultural. Our students shared a bit of insight about their experience on our website and Instagram as they adjust back into campus life in Pittsburgh. Since 2008, an average of 513 students participate in study abroad programs each year.

"One of my favorite things about being here is all of the friends that I have made. In my class at school, I am working with people from Ireland, Scotland, England, Belgium, Canada, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. Having such a diverse group of people in the school brings lots of different perspectives that I haven’t had access to before. Not only am I learning a lot from my classes, I can feel myself growing and expanding as an individual."⠀ ⠀ @cate.hayman is currently studying abroad in Wales. How has studying abroad contributed to your college experience? “I’ve always had an interest in learning other languages, and when I came to college I decided that I’d give Chinese a try. Eventually I decided to minor in it and thought the best way to improve my language skills was to study abroad. Studying abroad was one of the best choices I made towards my college experience because no amount of learning a language stateside stacks up to being fully immersed in the language and culture of another country firsthand. I really wish everybody who has the chances to study abroad takes it because it will give you a completely new perspective on how the world works.” .
