Upcoming Scholarship and Funding Deadlines

Studying abroad is a rewarding experience and there are many scholarships and funding options available to students to help support your goals! As you begin to think about your options for studying abroad, consider these upcoming scholarship and funding deadlines. The Office of International Education and many CMU colleges offer scholarships, learn more about Carnegie Mellon awards and scholarship opportunities. Universities abroad and external study abroad programs may also offer scholarships, so ask when applying! You can also find additional information about funding and scholarships on our Funding page. Several opportunities have upcoming deadlines:

The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia Scholarship

The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia Scholarship grants awards from $3,000-5,000 to study in an East or Southeast Asian country.  Applications open on Feb. 1 for study abroad in 2024 or 2025.

The Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) offers scholarships of $1,000-$5,000 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents to study abroad anywhere in the world for any length of time. For study abroad in fall 2024 or for academic year 24-25, applications are due Feb. 7.

FEA also has tuition waivers for study abroad opportunities at Mary Immaculate College, Trinity College Dublin, University of Galway, University College Cork, and University of Limerick in Ireland, or $5,000 cash scholarships to other programs in Ireland through the Ireland Access Partner Scholarships. The application (which covers all FEA scholarships) is due Feb. 7.

The Jennings Family Brave Companions Fund

The Jennings Family Brave Companions Fund scholarship is a $6,000 award to support summer study abroad for CMU students in non-traditional study abroad locations.  Applications are due Feb. 16.

The Office of International Education

March is a big monthIt's the application deadline for three CMU study abroad scholarships for Summer Study Abroad: the CMU Global Engagement Scholarship, and the Arthur F. and Mary Ellen Cranell Naylor Study Abroad Award, both due March 1, and the Tartans Abroad Scholarship (awards up to $1,000 to be used for Summer Study Abroad) on March 31 

IFSA

The IFSA First-Generation Scholarship is designed to give first-generation college students a chance to benefit from the life-changing experience of studying abroad. This scholarship awards up to $2,500, and applications are due March 1.

The Gillman Scholarship

Applications to the Gilman Scholarship are due by March 7. You must be the recipient of a Federal Pell Grant to qualify for this scholarship. These awards can be used for any short-term, semester, or academic year programs in the 2024 calendar year, as well as spring 2025.

Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive a Critical Need Language Award from the Gilman Scholarship Program for a total possible award of $8,000 if they are studying one of 16 critical need languages while abroad.
