Winter Week of Welcome

The Office of Student Leadership, Involvement and Civic Engagement (SLICE) organizes an exciting, week-long slate of events for students that runs January 15-22, 2020Through the collaborative and celebratory events we will reconnect your student to the campus and Pittsburgh community. The Winter Week of Welcome is a great way for your student to get more involved with CMU’s student organizations, build school spirit by cheering on our athletic teams, participate in service projects, and practice wellness as they start their spring semester.

Wednesday, January 15  

Wellness Wednesday  
Be Well @ CMU and SLICE have collaborated to create a mindfulness experience from 12-3 pm where we will have chair massages, adult coloring, and activities with Headspace as CMU reaches one million minutes listened. We’ll also have Wheely Good Smoothies where students jump on a spin bike and spin their own smoothie. From 7-8 pm, Paws to Relax will be in the Mindfulness Room to wrap up the evening.  

Thursday, January 16 

Coffee with the Cops (10 am - 1 pm, Kirr Commons)
The Carnegie Mellon Police Department will be in the Kirr Commons in the Cohon Center from 10 am-1 pm with free coffee and breakfast treats for students to build relationships and have conversations with officers and security guards.  

Greek Night (8 pm, Rangos 3)
Is your student interested in fraternity or sorority membership at CMU? They can stop by Rangos 3 in the Cohon Center starting at 8 pm and meet our Greek-letter organizations and hear about the friendship, support, and involvement opportunities fraternities and sororities provide! 

Friday, January 17 

Women’s and Men’s Basketball (6 pm and 8 pm, Skibo Gym)
Cheer on the Tartans as the Women’s Basketball team plays at 6 pm and Men’s team plays at 8 pm against Chicago University in Skibo Gym.

Drag Bingo (9 pm, McConomy Auditorium)
SLICE works with LGBTQ organizations PRISM and CMQ+ to present Drag Bingo hosted by local Pittsburgh Drag Queen, Lola LeCroix, starting at 9 pm in McConomy Auditorium. Free to play, students are able to have fun, enjoy a show and play B-I-N-G-O to win awesome prizes. 

Saturday, January 18 

Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving Meet (1 pm, Cohon Center Pool)
Cheer on the Tartans as they compete against Denison University and Calvin College at 1 pm at the swimming pool in the Cohon Center.  

Activities Board Films with Pittsburgh Popcorn (8 pm and 10 pm, McConomy Auditorium) 
We’ll have free Pittsburgh Popcorn at the AB Films movie showings at 8 pm and 10 pm in McConomy Auditorium. 

Sunday, January 19 

Men’s and Women’s Basketball (12 pm and 2 pm, Skibo Gym)  
Cheer on the Tartans as the Men’s Basketball team plays at 12 pm and Women’s team plays at 2 pm against Washington University in Skibo Gym. Some special Tartan apparel will be given out to attendees. 

Monday January 20 

The Annual MLK Writing Awards (4:30 pm, Rangos)
Sponsored by the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, Department of English and Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Science, the annual celebration features readings by the top three winners in high school and college poetry and prose. Along with musical performances and refreshments, honorable mentions and top entries of each participating school are also recognized. 

Tuesday, January 21 

Tartan Tuesday (12 - 5 pm)
Every Tuesday throughout the academic year, students are encouraged to wear CMU apparel to show their Tartan pride. Participating is simple – wear Tartan pride, visit the Cohon Center Info Desk, stop in the Alumni House or find a Highland Ambassador from 12-5 pm to get a “peel to reveal” ticket to win cool prizes from the Alumni Association! 

S’mores Indoors (12 - 2 pm, Kirr Commons) 
Students can stop by Kirr Commons in the Cohon Center from 12-2 pm, grab some graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate to make some s’mores indoors with SLICE and the Spring Carnival Committee!

Bagged Lunch Project (4:30-6:30 pm, Rangos 1) 
SLICE and the student organization, Partners Allied in Civic Engagement (PACE), will be packaging bagged lunches to benefit the Light of Life Rescue Mission from 4:30-6:30 pm.  

Wednesday, January 22 

The Winter FAIR (4:30-6 pm, Connan Room and Weigand Gym) 
A one-stop fair for students to roam and find ways to get involved with student organizations at CMU. The fair will showcase many of our 300+ student organizations that span a variety of interests and passions representing community service/philanthropy, political/activism, professional/academic, performance/artistic, and more. 

Soup Crawl (5-7 pm) 
Your students will help Dining Services and Chartwells discover the best soup on campus. They can stop by various dining locations from 5-7 pm to try the soup and drop off their ballot at the Cohon Center Info Desk.
