Curriculum Plans & Registration
How Registration Works
With the exception of the first Fall semester, MSSM students are expected to register for courses through their SIO account. Registration for each term takes place during a specified period of time (as noted on the CMU Academic Calendar). Students should make sure to take note of registration dates & deadlines.
Students are encouraged to read through the SIO registration guide below for details on how to navigate the registration process. Additional registration-related information may be sent out from your iii Academic Advisor via email.

Students can request a course overload after completing their first semester with a 3.6 GPA or higher.
Part-Time MSSM 2nd-Year Transition Guide
For Part-Time MSSM students who started their program in Fall 2022.
This comparison chart provides an overall of how and when an Independent Study, Capstone or Practicum experience could be a part of your MSSM degree. MSSM students can talk with their academic advisor about these opportunities after completing their first semester.
Independent Study
An independent study course is an individual student project guided by a CMU faculty member for variable units (6 – 12 units) as an elective.

Capstone
A capstone course is a team project guided by a CMU faculty member to work on a student concept or idea for variable units during a student's final semester. Depending on degree plan, this course will either be an optional requirement or an elective.
Practicum
A practicum experience is a team project guided by a CMU faculty member to work on an industry sponsored topic or problem during
The procedure for participating in practicum will be sent to all eligible students directly.
Start-Up Creation in Practice
Similar to an independent study, the Start-Up Creation in Practice course focuses specifically on new venture creation. Students will work on developing their technology-focused idea into a potentially viable company during the semester.

For students in the MSSM program who are interested in launching their own new venture or pursuing a career in entrepreneurship. Explore the Technology Ventures .PDF document or expand the roadmap section below.

- 49-802: Innovation & Entrepreneurship (1st or Final Fall semester)
- 49-803: Legal Issues in New Venture Creation (Spring, Mini 3)

- 49-800: Start-Up Creation in Practice (Final Fall semester)
- Add the Technology Ventures Track to your Stellic Audit
To ensure that you are taking the four courses included in the Technology Ventures concentration, add the Technology Ventures Track to your Stellic Audit. Details on how to add the TV track to your audit can be found here.
2. Connect with the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship
- Review the opportunities shared with students during New Student Orientation.
- Subscribe to the Swartz Center Newsletter to stay up-to-date.

3. Engage with the CMU-SV Entrepreneurship Club
The Entrepreneurship Club is dedicated to creating a thriving entrepreneurial community that lasts beyond CMU-SV.
- Attend Entrepreneurship Club Events throughout the year and even get involved as a leader.
- Leaders have the opportunity to plan entrepreneurship- related events & initiatives for the CMU-SV community.

Internship Search Resources & Requirements
Students in the MSSM - 16 month degree will complete a required internship during the summer term. These resources will help you prepare for your internship.
MSSM Requirements
- Students should complete form on a monthly basis beginning in February 2025.
- Review these step by step processes to secure your internship degree requirement.
- Students who have accepted an internship should complete the form above in order to registered into the internship course 49-793 - Integrated Innovation Institute Internship SV.
International Student Resources
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Information - OIE
- Review details to apply for CPT once your internship is confirmed.
- Share this offer letter template with your employer to make sure all the necessary details are included in your offer.

CMU-SV Student Services Team
CMU-SV Career ServicesYour liaison for the Office of International Education, CaPS, University Health Services, and the Student Academic Success Center.
Resources for Mental Health
One Medical: A network of licensed medical professionals and a benefit for CMU-SV students. Students have free membership to these medical services, which include a wellness series.
Highmark Amwell Telehealth Therapy and Psychiatry Services: If you're enrolled in CMU's SHIP (student health insurance plan) and are interested in in-network outpatient counseling, you have access to telemedicine services and can meet with a mental health professional virtually at no cost to you and for an unlimited number of sessions.
Thriving Campus: A platform that allows you to find a local therapist that specializes in working with students in higher education.
MSSM Community Impact Fellowship Program
The goal of this fellowship program is to create leadership opportunities for MSSM students and foster community within the Integrated Innovation Institute through the facilitation of various projects, events, and initiatives designed to engage MSSM students, staff, & faculty on the CMU-SV campus and in the Silicon Valley ecosystem.

Community Bridge Fellowship:
Awarded to two 16-month MSSM students (one continuing & one incoming), Community Bridge Fellows work together to build community across the MSSM student cohorts and to strengthen the connection between MSSM students, faculty, & staff.
