Soorakkulame Pemaratana serves as Special Faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. His teaching focuses on Asian religions, Buddhism and modernity, and the history of yoga and meditation.

He earned his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 2017 and was a Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania from 2020 to 2022. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, he taught at the University of Pittsburgh and John Carroll University. He is currently completing a book manuscript titled Reimagining the Buddha: Modern Modes of Refuge in Sri Lankan Buddhism, which is under review with the University of Virginia Press.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Pemaratana serves as the chief monk of the Pittsburgh Buddhist Center, where he teaches meditation and offers spiritual counseling.
