Bio
Arko Dasgupta holds a Ph.D. in History from Carnegie Mellon University and previously served as a Doctoral Fellow at Duke University. His research centres on the British Empire, Modern India, the Indian diaspora, and African American History. Through his scholarship, he explores the intersections of anticolonial and antiracist thought in twentieth-century India and its diaspora, examining transnational networks of solidarity that spanned continents. His dissertation, The Colour of Anticolonialism: Locating Antiracism in the Indian Freedom Struggle, traces how antiracism unified disparate elements of the Indian political elite while creating tensions within diasporic communities, particularly in the United States. His research has taken him to archives across India and the United States and has been supported by fellowships including the Kedia-Tayur Fellowship in South Asian American History, the Prafulla C Mukerji Fellowship, and the Graduate Small project Help (GuSH) Research Grant.
Drawing on an interdisciplinary background that encompasses history, international studies, political theory, economics, and sociology, he has taught a variety of courses across institutions. At Carnegie Mellon, he served as a teaching assistant for Global History, co-instructor in a course on African American History, and designed & taught a course examining post-colonial India through cinema and visual culture. At Duke, he offered a course on Inequality and Reparations from a transnational perspective.
His commitment to public engagement includes involvement with the LEAP (Leadership, Excellence, Access, Persistence) Programme at Carnegie Mellon, where he worked with Pittsburgh high school students. He has collaborated with the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA) to develop educational materials that translate academic research for school curricula and broader audiences. His writing appears in scholarly journals such as IIC Quarterly and Perspectives (American Historical Association), alongside popular publications like The Indian Express, Scroll.in, The Wire, and PublicSource.
