Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) today announced that Learnvia, its nonprofit learning collaborative, will expand to military colleges, bringing AI-enabled courseware and decades of Carnegie Mellon research in learning science to the education of America's future military leaders.
The expansion will begin with Valley Forge Military College(opens in new window), Pennsylvania's only military college, with additional military colleges expected to join the initiative over the coming year.
Launched by Carnegie Mellon with support from the Gates Foundation, Learnvia combines free AI-enabled courseware and great teaching with decades of research in learning science to improve student success in gateway mathematics college courses. Designed to complement classroom teaching and amplify rather than replace expert human instruction, the platform integrates lessons, interactive learning activities, homework, assessments, discussion forums and an AI tutor into a single learning environment. Today, the collaborative’s national network spans faculty and students at 41 colleges and universities, with expansion planned to more than 100 institutions by fall 2026.
“America's competitive advantage depends on preparing the people who will lead," said CMU President Farnam Jahanian. “By expanding Learnvia to military colleges, we're extending Carnegie Mellon's expertise in learning science and artificial intelligence to help educate the next generation of military leaders. Just as importantly, we’re welcoming military colleges into a broader learning collaborative where educators, researchers, and institutions work together to continually improve teaching, courseware, and student success.”
In the United States, gateway courses derail the academic progress and degree completion for approximately 30% of learners across higher education. One subject in particular — introductory mathematics — is the greatest barrier to student success in higher education, according to the Mathematical Association of America. To address this challenge, Learnvia has focused on supporting success in Calculus I and plans to expand to Quantitative Reasoning, Pre-Calculus, Calculus II and Calculus III over the next three years. These courses underpin fields critical to national priorities, and play an essential role in preparing learners for the modern workforce.
The expansion reflects Carnegie Mellon's broader commitment to strengthening America's national security through both technological innovation and talent development. As autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and cyber capabilities become increasingly central to national defense, preparing future military leaders and technical professionals with the tools to master complex technical disciplines has never been more important.
“Our mission is to equip young leaders with the character, discipline, and intellectual fortitude necessary for an increasingly intricate global landscape,” said Col. Stuart B. Helgeson, USMC (Ret), Valley Forge Military College President. “This partnership with Carnegie Mellon’s Learnvia initiative provides our cadets and faculty with access to premier learning science and AI-enhanced resources. Our collaboration underscores a mutual dedication to cultivating future officers possessing the technical acumen, analytical capacity, and persistence required for national service.”
Like all Learnvia implementations, the partnership will contribute to a broader learning collaborative in which faculty, researchers, and institutions continuously improve both teaching practice and the courseware itself. That research-practice cycle enables Learnvia to translate new evidence into better learning experiences over time.
Learnvia is distinguished by decades of Carnegie Mellon's pioneering research into how people learn. Flexible course configurations preserve instructor autonomy gaining real-time insights into student learning, automated assessments and flexible course configurations. Students benefit from personalized support, error-specific feedback and an AI tutor trained specifically on course content, helping them persist through challenging material while arriving in class better prepared.
As Learnvia’s national higher education network continues to grow, this new partnership has the potential to serve as a model for military education nationwide, advancing Carnegie Mellon’s vision for harnessing artificial intelligence and the science of learning to further strengthen teaching, learning, workforce development and U.S. competitiveness.
