Learnvia is a nonprofit learning collaborative launched by Carnegie Mellon University with support from the Gates Foundation. It pairs free, AI-enabled courseware with decades of learning science insights to drive student success in gateway college courses, beginning with introductory mathematics.

WHY?

Gateway math courses carry some of the highest failure and withdrawal rates in higher education, serving as common roadblocks rather than runways for many learners. At the same time, many workers — across a wide range of career types — need math skills. Learnvia is tackling this challenge head-on, prioritizing support for mathematics courses at broad-access universities, two- and four-year colleges and community colleges nationwide.

Learnvia’s Calculus I pilot includes flexible course configurations and ready-to-use templates that can seamlessly integrate into a faculty member’s existing syllabus. The Learnvia coursework catalog will continue to grow — with an initial focus on adding introductory mathematics courses — in the coming years.

TRY LEARNVIA TODAY

This academic year, faculty and students at 38 U.S. institutions are using Learnvia’s free, AI-enhanced courseware to strengthen math skills, starting with Calculus I proficiency.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR STUDENTS?

A Complement to In-Class Learning

Learnvia doesn’t replace in-classroom learning, it complements it. It bundles lessons, interactive “learn by doing” videos, homework, quizzes and exams, discussions, and AI-powered tutoring in a single seamless, mobile-friendly platform for students to use anytime, anywhere. Its weekly cycle of lessons, homework and quizzes helps students arrive for class prepared and ready to learn.

Quick Wins

Learnvia packs its lessons with short 15-minute activities to keep students engaged. Each activity builds incrementally toward homework, which then prepares students for quizzes to assess learning goals.

Stressless Learning

Students can attempt assignments multiple times, receive error-specific hints and explanations, and launch an on-demand AI tutor trained on the courseware. These options enable students to independently push through challenging material.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR FACULTY?

Research Informed

Faculty have access to evidence-based insights shaped through decades of CMU’s leadership in the field of learning science. The coursework is also built to improve — continuously and in real-time — using feedback gathered from Learnvia’s national network of users.

Built-in Assessments

Auto-graded assignments and activities give faculty time back in their schedule.

Instant Check-Ins

Dashboards and performance data enable faculty to pinpoint exactly where students are struggling and when more support might be necessary.

Adaptable by Design

Faculty can rearrange, include or exclude, make optional, and rename content and modules. They can also add notes, adjust pacing, and modify assessments. To aid in setup, Learnvia operates a personal concierge service and pre-built course configurations for standard academic terms.

Amy Burkert

“Too many talented students are told by a single grade, in a single class, that they don’t belong in college or can’t ‘do’ math. Learnvia is designed to change that experience by providing research-based, personalized support that strengthens skills, builds confidence and opens pathways to future success. Carnegie Mellon University is proud to be a part of this historic effort to expand access to high-quality learning.”
