CSAFE Lab Group

csafe logoThe Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence (CSAFE) is a nationally recognized center including 6 core universities, over 60 researchers, research institutes, and national practitioners. CMU is a core CSAFE university, with faculty and affiliates contributing to the partnership with UC Irvine, Duke, University of Virginia, and the University West Virginia, coordinated by Iowa State. Funded by NIST, our interdisciplinary team works on building a statistically sound and scientifically solid foundation for interpretation of pattern evidence (including fingerprints and bullet marks) and digital evidence (including data from cell phones and computers). Additionally, the center provides education and training in these new methods, and transfers the new tools to forensic practitioners and other stakeholders.
