#GivingCMUDay

For this #GivingCMUDay, help us provide support to students interested in embarking on a new study abroad program in our department. Statistics & Data Science is partnering with the Department of Modern Languages and the Monteverde Institute in the Puntarenas region of Costa Rica to offer a summer study abroad and experiential learning program in Summer 2024.

This 5-week program offers an invaluable opportunity for our students to learn first-hand about sustainability and environmental stewardship, while also learning Spanish and about Costa Rican culture. Additionally, students will be able to impactfully contribute through real-world data analysis projects in collaboration with Monteverde researchers and local community organizations.

In both the class and the internship/community engagement project, students will directly engage with, process, visualize, and/or analyze data collected by researchers at the Monteverde Institute and in the community. The mission of the institute is to promote sustainable practices that benefit both the local community and local wildlife, and students will be working on ecological data on bats, birds, reforestation, and stream beds, as well as data arising from community surveys.
