Chinese Popular Culture: A Game of Learning

Course Number: 82-432

There are two reasons why the course is called "A Game of Learning" (and not "A Game of Thrones"): 1. We will be using a video game (i.e. Chinese Parents) as the primary learning resource to explore, discuss, and analyze different aspects of Chinese society and popular culture, such as naming, education, school life and youth culture; 2. We will be using a "gameful learning theory" to design and structure the course, so that all your efforts and accomplishments will earn your precious points (Yes, just like in a game) that help you get your desirable grade at the end of the semester. In other words, with the exception of a few core assignments, you will have the option to complete or not complete all other assignments based on your learning interest and habit. With this power in hand, you can create a unique learning process and a "game ending" that is solely your own.
