Study Abroad in Heidelberg

The Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics is pleased to offer an intensive six-week summer study abroad program in Heidelberg, Germany.

About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is the classic German student city bustling with a wide range of cultural activities such as theater, dance, and music and all types of shops, student pubs and sports facilities. It is located on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany, one of the sunniest and warmest corners of the country. Today, Heidelberg is also known for its sidewalk cafes and for the friendly, relaxed approach to life of the typical Heidelberger. The city holds outdoor concerts and opera productions in the spring and summer and transforms in early December to host the colorful Christmas Markets or “Weihnachtsmarkt.” With more than 140,000 inhabitants, Heidelberg is large enough to have a lively cultural scene and yet small enough to not be overwhelming.

Students will take courses at the American Junior Year (AJY) Study Center located in the center of the Old Town.

Program dates: May 27 - July 5, 2024

Students will earn 18 units (courses at the 200- and 300-level) during this six-week intensive study abroad program. Students will be placed at the appropriate level for their language abilities. All classes are taught exclusively in German. The curriculum is built around co-curricular activities and site visits in Heidelberg and beyond. Students may take an additional three-credit course about contemporary controversies in German culture.

Students are required to have taken a minimum of two semesters of German language to participate in this program.

Total program cost: $7,530
