Carnegie Mellon University

Undergraduate Program in Korean Studies

Welcome to the newest addition to the Department of Languagees, Cultures & Applied Linguistics! The Korean Studies program was established in response to increased student demand for Korean language and culture courses.

As of Fall 2023, we offer courses in elementary Korean language (I & II), and beginning fall 2024,
we will offer intermediate Korean language as well as Korean culture courses in English.

Korean is spoken by over 81 million people on the Korean peninsula, as well as over 1 million
heritage speakers in the United States, making it the ninth most-spoken language in this country.
The impact of Korean businesses, technology developments, cuisine, music, film, fine arts and
popular culture is powerful and growing world-wide.

Our courses in Korean and English will take you through the fascinating history of this culturally rich and diverse region of the world. According to the 2021 Modern Language Report on Enrollments in Languages Other than English at U.S. Institutions of Higher Education, enrollments in Korean language courses increased by 38.3% between 2016 and 2021. Across the country, Korean language and culture
courses are thriving and growing, and Korean Studies at CMU is no exception!
