International Day of Women Keynote

Pam Wigley

Hard-Won Respect and the Key to Success

Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodriguez, founder of Latina Rebels, will deliver a 5 p.m. EST March 8 Zoom keynote message focused on her personal journey to success, despite obstacles related to her race and gender. She also will share her views on how society tried to silence her work, unsuccessfully, based on stereotypes of Latinx women.

Mojica Rodriguez, a native of Managua, Nicaragua, earned her master’s degree in divinity from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., which she now calls home. She spends much of her time as part of an international community of people working toward dispelling racist and classist thoughts. She was part of the young adult anthology, "Nevertheless, We Persisted,” a collection of essays that highlights 48 stories of “defiance, strength and courage.”

Recently, Mojica Rodriguez participated in an anthology edited by Lynda Lopez titled, "The Fearless Rise and Powerful Resonance of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez." The book follows the rise in politics of Ocasio-Cortez, who beat a 10-term incumbent in the primary election for New York’s 14th District and her journey to the national and world stages.

Mojica Rodriguez started the platform Latina Rebels in 2013, which currently boasts over 300,000 organic followers online. She has been featured in Telemundo, Univision, Mitú, Huffington Post Latino Voices, Guerrilla Feminism, Latina Mag, Cosmopolitan, Everyday Feminism, and was invited to the White House in fall 2016. She is “unapologetic, angry, and uncompromising about protecting and upholding the stories of Latinx communities,” according to her official biography. Currently, Prisca is writing her first full-length book with Seal Press, a subsidiary of Hachette Book Group, due out this fall.

All are welcome to join in celebrating International Day of Women by attending this event, sponsored by the College of Fine Arts as part of Women’s Herstory Month.
