Student Commencement Speaker Application

Each year, CMU selects one student to represent their graduating class at the campus-wide Commencement ceremony in May. The selected student speaker is given the unique opportunity to speak to their classmates, staff, faculty, families and other guests with an address of their own creation.

Selection Process

  • The Student Commencement Speaker Application is online and consists of brief reflective questions, a copy of the applicant's resume, a letter of recommendation from a staff or faculty member, an initial draft of the speech and a video recording of the applicant performing the speech.
  • A selection committee consisting of faculty, staff and students reviews all applications and interviews candidates. Applicants are judged on the quality of the speech, vocal presence and body language, and how well the speech represents the ideals and values of CMU.
  • Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply for the speaker position, provided they are in good standing with the university and are graduating (or graduated) in December 2025, May 2026 or August 2026.
  • The student speaker will work with a coach to revise and refine their speech from the time of the selection through the graduation ceremony.
