Fearing science pushed aside, experts meet in protest of EPA's air quality change
A group of 20 air quality experts, organized by the Union of Concerned Scientists and panel chair H. Christopher Frey, an engineering professor at North Carolina State University, met on Thursday to discuss the EPA’s new air quality changes.

Heinz College Dean Krishnan Named National Academy of Public Administration Fellow
Carnegie Mellon University announced that Ramayya Krishnan, dean of the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, has been selected by the National Academy of Public Administration for inclusion in its 2019 Class of Academy Fellows, in recognition of his years of public administration service and expertise. Induction of the 51 new fellows will occur during the Academy's annual Fall Meeting, Nov. 7-8 in Arlington, Virginia.

Two EPP undergrads named College of Engineering ACS Scholars
Frank Andujar Lugo, undergraduate in the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering & Public Policy, and Taylor Brown, undergraduate in the departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Engineering & Public Policy, were two of the 10 selected recipients of this year’s College of Engineering ACS Scholars program.

Samaras on Sanders climate plan
CEE and EPP's Costa Samaras was quoted in an Earther Gizmodo article about presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ climate plan. The proposal allocates $16.3 trillion through 2030 to vastly change the energy and transportation sectors in the U.S. and combat climate change.

Destenie Nock, ‘engineer for social good,’ joins EPP faculty
Destenie Nock has joined the departments of Engineering & Public Policy (EPP) and Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) this fall. She will begin as a Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow in EPP with an adjunct-faculty appointment to CEE, before starting as a tenure-track assistant professor in both EPP and CEE in the 2020 academic year.

CMU creates center to fight disinformation online
Carnegie Mellon announced on July 22nd that it has created a new research center to study online disinformation funded by a six-year, $5 million investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Center for Informed Democracy and Social Cybersecurity (IDeaS) will study how disinformation is spread through online channels, such as social media, and address how to counter its effects to preserve and build an informed citizenry.

SUCCEED 2019
The Summer Center for Climate, Energy, and Environmental Decision Making (SUCCEED) was held this year on campus on July 8-12 for high school students and on July 15 and 16 for teachers. Supported by the Center for Climate and Environmental Decision Making (CEDM), SUCCEED connects students and teachers with EPP PhD students and faculty members through a variety of presentations, activities, and field trips.
