2017 Student Engagement (Service) Award

Since coming to Carnegie Mellon University, Angela O. Ng (ENG 2016) has helped found Project Smile, and The Mindfulness Room, which are all devoted to spreading mental health awareness on campus. She participated in the IMPAQT program with CMU-Qatar (CMU-Q), and has held various leadership positions on campus as a live-in mentor, residential assistant, and community advisor for undergraduate students.

Ng’s community service has also spread to global communities. The Drinkable Book project brought her to Bangladesh, where she introduced and tested a new paper water filtration system to the community with her research group. The project is a step towards fulfilling Ng’s dream for advanced development in water sanitation technologies for developing countries.

Her work also extended to Guatemala and Kenya, where she taught English to local children, and to Rwanda, where she advanced computer systems and skills in the community.

Currently, Ng is a member of Carnegie Mellon’s prestigious Fifth Year Scholar program and has finished implementing a well-received program that brings therapy animals to campus every week to help alleviate the stress culture on campus.
