Since 1999, the American Council of Teachers of Russian has sponsored a National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest, which is open to students taking Russian courses at accredited colleges and universities in the United States. This year, students were asked to write a short essay on an important person in their life. The contest drew 1,326 essays from 67 schools around the country. Vinitha Ganesan, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biological Sciences, received an honorable mention award for her submission. Ganesan was one of just 26 students recognized at the beginner’s level (Category A, Level 1).
