  The Cut

Carnegie Mellon's central lawn, called The Cut, offers glimpses of the university's academic, administrative, residential and recreational settings.

Named for a ravine that separated campus in the institution's early days, the parklike Cut is speckled with students heading to and from class, tossing Frisbees or accessing the campus' wireless computer network with their laptops.

Beyond the clock and the Fence (a campus landmark used to post student messages) are views of Hunt Library and the Mall's quadrangle of academic and research buildings, including Baker and Doherty halls.

Walkways lead from the Mall past the beautiful new Purnell Center for the Arts, where the world-renowned Drama School trains future performers, artists and entertainment professionals. Inside, the Regina Gouger Miller Art Gallery brings thought-provoking art exhibits to the university community.

Students, faculty and staff walk along the Cut to the University Center for dining, shopping, exercise, meetings and entertainment.
