Where Quantitative Talent Meets Opportunity: The MSCF Employer Trek
More than 100 Carnegie Mellon students engaged in 850+ employer interactions across 30 top financial organizations.
Each year, students in Carnegie Mellon University’s Master of Science in Computational Finance (MSCF) program step beyond the classroom to meet industry professionals, explore career paths, and experience quantitative finance at work.
Held annually in New York City and Chicago, the MSCF Employer Trek is a signature component of the student experience. The trek introduces incoming students to leading financial organizations while giving them an early opportunity to engage with industry professionals, recruiters, and Carnegie Mellon alumni.
For employers, the program provides an early opportunity to meet highly qualified quantitative talent as students begin preparing for summer internships and full-time careers in quantitative finance.
Connecting the Classroom to the Industry
Through panel discussions, site tours, and networking sessions, students gain an inside view of how quantitative professionals contribute to decisions across global markets. Visits to investment banks, hedge funds, asset managers, and proprietary trading firms help students connect their rigorous academic coursework with real-world financial operations.
Approximately 100 students participated in the 2026 Employer Trek, visiting 30 organizations across New York City and Chicago and taking part in more than 850 individual student-employer experiences.
Each visit offers a distinct look into a firm’s business model, culture, technology, working environment, and career opportunities. Students ask candid questions, build professional relationships, and gain a clearer understanding of where their skills and interests fit within the broader quantitative finance landscape.
After meeting and talking with a lot of different traders and researchers, although they all came from very diverse and unique backgrounds, they were able to leverage unique strengths into the different roles that they had at these companies and how it all came to together in their unique pods and structures in order to help provide add value to the firm.

Beyond Recruiting
While the Employer Trek creates valuable connections between students and employers, its impact extends well beyond immediate hiring.
Students see how quantitative concepts are applied within real organizations, explore specialized roles across the industry, and receive direct advice from experienced practitioners. These insights help students evaluate company cultures, team structures, and approaches to collaboration as they consider the environments in which they are most likely to thrive.
For participating firms, the trek offers an opportunity to introduce students to their organization, highlight internship and full-time career opportunities, and begin building relationships before formal recruiting begins.
Alumni Bring the MSCF Experience Full Circle
Carnegie Mellon alumni play an essential role in the trek’s success. By sharing candid reflections on their own career paths, alumni help current students envision the transition from the classroom to the workplace.
Their perspectives offer realistic insights into the choices, challenges, and milestones that can shape a career in quantitative finance while reinforcing the strength of the global MSCF alumni network.
MSCF extends its gratitude to the participating employers, recruiting teams, industry leaders, and alumni who shared their time and expertise. Their involvement transforms each site visit into a valuable learning experience.
Explore MSCF Employment Outcomes
The relationships initiated during the Employer Trek complement the strong career outcomes achieved by MSCF graduates.
The annual MSCF Employment Report provides detailed information on placement rates at graduation and three and six months after graduation, along with the firms hiring MSCF graduates, the job functions they enter, and reported compensation.
